Ian is recognised as one of Australia’s leading construction practitioners.
He has particular expertise in major construction disputes, commercial arbitrations and court references and has acted in a broad range of disputes locally and internationally.
With significant experience in all forms of dispute resolution, Ian is an accredited Mediator, Adjudicator, Expert Determiner and Grade 1 Arbitrator. His practice includes the conduct of commercial and technical proceedings as an Arbitrator and Court Appointed Referee.
Complementing his strong interest in alternative dispute resolution, Ian held the position of National Vice President of the Institute of Arbitrators and Mediators Australia (IAMA) between 2004 and 2008. He is a Professorial Fellow of the University of Melbourne Law School and was Co-Director of Studies for the Construction Law Graduate Program from 2000 to 2014.
Ian’s vast industry knowledge is highlighted by his previous career as an architect for ten years on commercial and residential projects in Sydney.
He was appointed as a Member of the Order of Australia in January 2017.
